What Causes Knee Pain?

The knee is exposed to significant forces during everyday movement and even greater demands during running, jumping, lifting, and sports.

Your evaluation begins with understanding where you feel the pain, how it started, what activities aggravate it, and whether you have experienced symptoms such as swelling, instability, catching, or locking.

Depending on your presentation, we may assess:

  • Knee range of motion

  • Ligament stability

  • Meniscus-related findings

  • Patellar movement

  • Quadriceps and hamstring strength

  • Hip strength

  • Ankle mobility

  • Single-leg balance and control

  • Squatting and lunging mechanics

  • Running or jumping movements when appropriate

  • Activities specific to your sport or training

These findings help us determine what may be contributing to your symptoms and whether conservative treatment is appropriate.

Patellofemoral and Anterior Knee Pain

Pain around or behind the kneecap is common in runners, lifters, athletes, and active adults.

Symptoms may occur with squatting, lunging, running, stairs, prolonged sitting, or repetitive knee bending.

Treatment often focuses on gradually improving the knee's tolerance to load while addressing relevant strength or movement limitations throughout the lower extremity.

Rather than simply avoiding painful activities indefinitely, rehabilitation progressively prepares the knee to handle those activities again.

Patellar Tendon Pain

The patellar tendon connects the kneecap to the shin and plays an important role in transferring force during running, jumping, and explosive movements.

Patellar tendinopathy is particularly common in athletes participating in jumping sports but can also develop from repetitive lifting, running, or sudden increases in activity.

Treatment may include progressive tendon loading, strengthening, activity modification, and shockwave therapy when appropriate.

Shockwave Therapy for Knee and Tendon Pain

Shockwave therapy may be incorporated for certain persistent tendon-related knee conditions, including patellar tendinopathy.

As symptoms improve, rehabilitation should progressively expose the knee to the forces it will experience during those activities.

For an athlete, this may eventually include heavier strength training, jumping, landing, acceleration, deceleration, or changes of direction.

Our goal is to help you build confidence in the knee rather than simply learning which movements to avoid.

When Should Knee Pain Be Evaluated?

Knee pain that persists, repeatedly returns, or limits your ability to exercise and perform normal activities is worth evaluating.

More immediate evaluation may be appropriate following significant trauma, inability to bear weight, substantial swelling, obvious deformity, persistent locking, or significant instability.

For gradual or activity-related knee pain, an examination can help determine what may be contributing and develop an appropriate treatment and rehabilitation plan.
