Therapeutic Modalities
Therapeutic modalities are devices or tools that we have in house that aim to provide pain relief and improve healing in conjunction with Chiropractic services and physical therapy. Chiropractors are trained to safely and effectively administer these physiotherapy modalities.
Shockwave
Shockwave therapy, also known as Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT), is a medical treatment that uses high-energy acoustic waves to stimulate tissue healing and promote pain relief in various musculoskeletal conditions.
Commonly treated conditions:
- Plantar fasciitis
- Achilles tendinopathy
- Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis)
- Rotator cuff tendinopathy
- Patellar tendinopathy (jumper's knee)
- Calcific shoulder tendinopathy
- Hip pain (e.g., trochanteric bursitis)
- Chronic back pain (non-specific)
- Stress fractures
Electric Muscle Stim
Electric stimulation, also known as electrical stimulation or e-stim, is a therapeutic technique that uses electrical currents to elicit specific physiological responses in the body. It is commonly used in physical therapy, rehabilitation, and sports medicine. The two main types we use are Transcutenaeous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) and Interferential Current (IFC).
TENS units use low-frequency electrical currents to stimulate sensory nerves. They are primarily used for pain management, often providing a tingling or massaging sensation that helps reduce pain perception.
IFC involves the use of two medium-frequency currents that cross paths within the body, creating an interference pattern. It is often used for pain relief and reducing muscle spasms.
Therapeutic Ultrasound
Therapeutic ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to produce deep heat within the targeted tissues. This heat can help increase blood flow, relax muscles, and reduce pain and stiffness. It is commonly used for conditions like muscle spasms and chronic pain.
Ultrasound therapy may enhance the body's natural healing processes by promoting tissue relaxation and improving the delivery of nutrients and oxygen to the injured area. This can aid in the repair of damaged muscles, tendons, and ligaments.
Laser Therapy
Cold laser therapy, also known as low-level laser therapy (LLLT) or photobiomodulation therapy, is a non-invasive and painless treatment that harnesses the power of specific wavelengths of light to interact with tissues at the cellular level. It is used to address a variety of musculoskeletal and soft tissue conditions.
Normatec Compression Therapy
Normatec compression therapy is a medical treatment method that employs pneumatic compression to enhance circulation and reduce swelling and discomfort in the extremities, particularly the legs and arms. It is widely used in various healthcare settings, including sports medicine, physical therapy, and post-operative care.
Hydrocolator Heating Packs and Ice
Heat and ice are two common treatments used to manage various musculoskeletal conditions and injuries. They have different effects on the body and are typically applied at different times during the injury or healing process.
Heat therapy is generally recommended for chronic conditions or injuries that are not inflamed, such as muscle tightness, arthritis, or muscle soreness.
It is best applied before activities to warm up tissues and improve flexibility or as part of a relaxation routine.
Ice therapy is generally recommended for acute injuries or conditions characterized by inflammation, such as recent sprains, strains, or acute joint injuries.
It's often applied immediately after an injury occurs to manage pain.
